Mumbai, December 27, 2014  The equity market may be hot this year, but the Central Zone Finals of the CFA Institute Research Challenge India for business schools in Central India cranked up the heat on an otherwise cool December afternoon. Teams from IIM Indore, FLAME, SCMHRD presented their research analysis and answered probing questions from an eminent panel of judges made up of senior portfolio managers – Harsha Upadhyaya, CFA from Kotak  Mahindra AMC; Ajit Dange, CFA from SBI Funds Management Private Limited and Amit Khurana, CFA from Dolat Capital

And in the end, it was the team from Symbiosis Centre of Management and Human Resource Development, Pune, which emerged as the winner and moved to the National level.

So what is the competition all about? Every year, the Indian Association of Investment Professionals (IAIP) organizes a research challenge across five zones. “This is a national challenge that brings together top universities, their students and investment professionals in an exciting and competitive forum.  Those taking part will get a practical insight to the work of a financial analyst to the very best international standards, incorporating the core principles of ethics and best practices. It is our great pleasure to have top universities in India eager to participate again this year in this competition”, says Kishor Bagri, CFA who is Director-in-charge at IAIP. This year, 47 business schools participated and the winners of each zone will compete at the National level from where two winners will represent India in the Asia Pacific regional challenge.

It is a great opportunity for students to learn hands-on through mentoring by industry professionals and intensive training in financial analysis. Students work in teams to research and analyse a publicly traded company — sometimes even meeting face-to-face with company management. Each team writes a research report on their assigned company with a buy, sell, or hold recommendation and may be asked to present and defend their analysis to a panel of industry professionals. Introduced in 2006, CFA Institute Research Challenge is considered as "the investment Olympics" for university students, with more than 10,000 students having participated. This year, more than 3,700+ students from 825+ universities worldwide will participate in the local rounds of the competition.
