posted Jul 17, 2012, 10:41 PM by Biharilal Deora CFA

Please refer to the official invite sent to your school for participation.

The CFA Institute Research Challenge was introduced to a global audience in 2006 and is considered, “the investment Olympics” for university students.

In only six years, almost 10,000 students have participated in the competition and learned best practices in equity analysis, report writing, and presentation skills

We have invited select set of leading business schools in India and look forward to your participation. IAIP has been hosting the event for several years and it has been very well received across business schools, students and the investment management and finance professionals community.

The Research Challenge is a competition in which student teams from the top business schools research an assigned publicly traded company  from an equity investment perspective, write an equity research report and present their report and findings to an esteemed panel of investment industry experts. One winning team from each zone will advance to compete in the National Finals of the CFA Institute Research Challenge, to be held in Mumbai in December 2012. Top two teams from the National Finals will advance to compete in the Asia Pacific Regional Investment Research Challenge in February 2013 to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The competition will culminate with the Global final of the 7th Annual CFA Institute Research Challenge®, to be held in London in April 2013.  The Global Challenge consists of the winners of the regional finals held in Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America.

2012 Global Final and APAC Regional Champions were Thammasat University, Representing CFA Society of Thailand.

This annual educational initiative, based on the Investment research challenge originally developed by the New York Society of Security Analysts, is designed to promote best practices in equity research among the next generation of analysts through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis. It complements students’ university curriculum by simulating the ‘real world’ experience of an equity analyst.

The Challenge spans one semester, and consists of the following components:

1.     Analysis of a Publicly Traded Company, Competitors and Industry

2.     Each team writes a research report on the subject company which is then critiqued and evaluated by experienced financial experts.

3.     Teams present their analysis to high-profile panels of experts from top financial institutions

4.     The students will get support and constant guidance from IAIP for accomplishing the above in the following manner:

a.     A detailed interaction with the management of the subject company, whereby the management will make a detailed presentation to the student teams and address a Q&A session.

b.    Mentoring  by an Equity Research Analyst or Portfolio Manager

5.     All domestic and International travel expenses will be borne by IAIP (Details to be communicated separately)

Each Business School chooses one team of 3 - 5 members to represent it. Only Graduate students are eligible. Students must be enrolled in the current term at the B School they represent at the time of the local Challenge final. CFA Charterholders and students who have prior work experience in fundamental company analysis are not eligible.

The team to participate at this year’s Challenge must be finalized and details send to us no later than July 31st 2012.
