CFA Institute Research Challenge in India – North Zone Final 2014-15 – Judges Profile

Mohit is an entrepreneur, investor and economy-watcher. After an M.A. from Delhi School of Economics, he joined Hindustan Lever as a management trainee, moving 4 years later to Delhi Flour Mills, where he established India’s first successful snack food brand, Crax. He still provides strategic direction to that business, as well as several other small- and mid-sized manufacturing firms. In 1990, he co-founded Teamwork, an arts company that produces the Jaipur Literary Festival, The Mahindra Excellence in Theater Awards (META), and annual festivals in Singapore, South Africa, Egypt and North America. In 2002, he co-promoted a chain of English language teaching centers in Delhi under the Swiss brand name, inlingua. Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Liberty Institute, a policy think-tank, he has a special interest in the policy thrust of education and macro-economics.  At the grassroots, he has been a founder member of NGOs in the Himalaya, and Nukkad, an initiative with street children. Mohit writes on investing - earlier for Outlook Money, and now for the website, Capital Mind. He is a mountain-lover, life-long trekker, and long-distance runner.

Varun is the managing director at American Appraisal responsible for overall management of operations in India, Singapore, Japan and Thailand, including technical direction and client management on complex engagements. He has more than 19 years of experience in valuation and financial advisory services and is part of the firm’s global strategic advisory board. Varun advises clients on valuation issues in relation to mergers, acquisitions, build-vs.-buy decisions, swap ratio determination, collateral valuation (especially when intangible assets are used as collateral) and financial reporting. Varun has been in his current position since 2008. Prior to joining American Appraisal, he worked with Deloitte, leading a team of 70 professionals in providing valuation services to US-based clients in relation to valuation of investments, purchase price allocation and impairment testing under US GAAP and IFRS. Varun was also a key member of a team set up to develop and implement standard valuation methodologies across the firm. Previously, he worked at PwC’s Financial Advisory Services practice in India, focusing on valuation and project finance.  He has done his masters in business administration from IIM Calcutta.


Vikas Gupta is a ICWA and MBA in finance from SIBM, Pune. He has an overall experience of over 13 years in almost all spectrum of the financial services industry ranging from credit rating, banking and equity research. Vikas has worked with various financial services companies like Standard Chartered Bank, The Bank of Nova Scotia, CARE and B&K Securities in various positions and is currently part of Investment team of Canara HSBC OBC Life Insurance.
