IIM, Shillong wins Indian round of CFA Institute Research Challenge

Mumbai, India, 14 February 2011 – As top business school teams were competing for the Indian winner position on 7th February at the Four Seasons Hotel, Mumbai the latter half of the evening saw Indian Institute of Management, Shillong (IIM Shillong) emerge as the winner to participate in the 2011 Asia Pacific regional round of CFA Institute Research Challenge hosted by CFA Institute, which is the global association for investment professionals.

CFA Institute Research Challenge in India - National Final Winner 2010-11

In India, CFA Institute and its member society Indian Association of Investment Professionals (IAIP) hosted the local competitions. Four winning teams from each zone (North, East, West and South) were present for the Indian national competition after being the winners among 29 leading business schools in India, with the zonal winners being - South: IFMR Chennai; North: IIM Lucknow; East: IIM Shillong; West: Flame Business School, Pune. The companies researched were - South Zone: United Breweries Limited, North Zone: HCL Technologies Limited, East Zone: Exide Industries Limited and West Zone: IDFC Limited.

The CFA Institute Research Challenge aims to provide university students with an unparalleled experience of working with investment industry professionals and publicly traded companies to produce an equity research report, as well as to promote the best practices in research among the next generation of analysts. All participants are introduced and held to the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct. Each university was represented by a team of students who undertook a two month review of a public company comprising of detailed interactions with senior executives at companies, investment thesis and risks analysis, financial modeling, valuation, comparable benchmarking, scenario creation and writing a detailed equity research report and presentation around all these aspects. This year’s panel of judges included Vikram Kotak, Chief Investment Officer, Birla Sun Life Insurance Co. Ltd; Sunil B Singhania, CFA, Head of Equity Investments at Reliance Mutual Fund and Suresh Mahadevan, CFA, Director and Head of India Research and Strategist, UBS Securities.

The winning team from IIM Shillong, with team members Sakshi Sharma, Veena Sankaran, Sumit Bagla, Sumita Kedia and Hitesh Gulati, are all geared up to represent India and compete with 15 other teams from Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Melbourne, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Thailand at the Asia Pacific regional round on 25th February 2011 in Bali, Indonesia.

Mr. Sunil Singhania, CFA, President, Indian Association of Investment Professionals said, “More than 400 universities from around the world compete in local rounds of the Research Challenge. The regional winners from the Asia Pacific, EMEA and Americas regions will compete for the global winner title on April 8, 2011 in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. This is a unique opportunity for students to get initiated into fundamental equity analysis and stock picking under the mentoring of experienced professionals from the investment management industry.”

India Association of Investment Professionals (IAIP)
India Association of Investment Professionals (IAIP), which is established April 2005 and located in Mumbai, is an association of local investment professionals. As one of the 136 CFA Institute member societies, IAIP connects members to a global network of investment professionals. CFA Institute, the global association for the investment profession, and its member societies established the CFA Institute Research Challenge to provide university students with an unparalleled experience of working with investment industry professionals and publicly traded companies to produce an equity research report, as well as to promote the best practices in research among the next generation of analysts. All participants are introduced and held to the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct. The competition was first introduced in 2002 by the New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA), which is a CFA Institute member society in New York. Enthusiasm for the event spread, resulting in the introduction of the CFA Institute Research Challenge in 2007.
